When comparing estimates
1. Starting with the basics. All roofs in SC require to be removed by law now. It used to be that you could do a 2nd layer on top of the old roof. Now it has changed. So....make sure he is removing all the old roofs, no matter if it is 1 or 5. A savings of $400.00 or more
2. When he removes the roof, is he going to install new felt paper. A lot of times when homeowners aren't around, they will save $50.00 - $100.00 not installing felt everywhere, just where you can see.
3. Is he going to install new pipe collars / boots around the pipes. A lot of times they will re use these, saving another $30.00
4. Is he going to install new box vents where your old ones were (if you had them). Each vent he re uses on your home saves him $15.00.....4 vents = $60.00
5. Is he going to install the same type vent system (if you had) or is it an updated better kind. Some times a vent is on the top of the roof.....they might put that same type on or re use that one......this can add up to $250.00 or more in savings for him.
6. Before he installs the new shingles.....is he going to install liners and starter shingles. Here is the one I see a lot......this one can save over $200.00 easily.
7. If you have valleys, is he using anything in the valleys as recommended. A savings of probably $75.00
8. The clean up, is he going to have a laborer working the ground to clean up at all times.....or just at the end of the job. I have a man at all times working the ground, especially so my trash does not blow into your neighbors yard, or your walkways stay cleaned for in and out access. 1 extra man = 11.00 per hour for clean up.
9. When he came out to do you estimate, did he just lay that big heavy ladder on your gutter. I use gutter protectors from the time I do your estimate until the time we finish, because I care.
